Homemade Kefir from Grains-
I'm a certified high school biology teacher, science lover and have a love for all things homemade. When my daughter was born, I discovered homemade buttermilk, yogurt, and kefir. Homemade Kefir is so incredibly easy to make. I love the feeling of giving my family homemade food since I can control what goes into it.
What is Kefir?
Homemade kefir is a probiotic yogurt-like drink made by using kefir grains. Kefir grains go back over 2,000 years and they've been passed on through the generations.
How to make homemade Kefir:
Homemade kefir is delicious and simple to make. One Tbsp of kefir grains is placed into a cup of milk, covered with a coffee filter or paper towel, to breathe and left to sit for 24 hours. The kefir grains are removed and ready for the next batch. They grow and multiply while turning the milk into kefir.
We love our homemade kefir blended with frozen fresh fruit, such as strawberries and a sweetener. Jams are a great substitute for fresh fruit in kefir.
Kefir grains can be purchased online or through ads in your local community if someone is selling them.
